How to get the system working

Use Chrome or Edge (WebMIDI + SysEx). Plug the Workshop Computer into this computer (device mode). Ports and MIDI relay usually auto-select — check Settings (⚙) if anything looks wrong.

1. Getting a sound

  1. Confirm the header shows the card identified (firmware version) and front-panel status goes Live. If not, click Connect on the Front panel, or open Settings → Identify.
  2. Play notes with the virtual keyboard at the bottom of this page (channel 1 = Voice A by default). You should hear audio on Audio Out 1/2 and see CV/gate on the jacks when a note is held.
  3. Prefer a real keyboard? Leave Relay on (auto-picks your controller) and play into this PC — notes are forwarded to the card.

Pitch reference: MIDI note 60 (C4) = 0 V on CV (Simple MIDI EEPROM cal). No sound? Check Audio Out cables and level on your external mixer, and that you’re not stuck in SETUP (header shows PLAY, not SETUP).

2. Tweaking

Open the Live tab for instant engine changes (RAM only until you write maps to flash).

  • Audio engine — start with Square/pulse; try Moogish / Acid / FM for filtered or FM character (engines 8–12).
  • Main selects learn slot in SETUP only (no effect in PLAY). Factory envelope is clickless gate (A=0 D=0 S=127 R=0). Raise Decay / Release (and optionally Attack) when you want a shaped amp envelope.
  • Hardware X → Attack, Y → Release (only when you actually move them, so Live settings aren’t constantly overwritten).
  • Cutoff opens the filter / sets FM index; PWM sets pulse width, sync ratio, acid wave, or FM ratio depending on engine.
  • ADSR, cutoff, and PWM live on the Live tab.

Card engine knobs in the header mirror what the card is actually running. Drum kit: MIDI channel 10, notes 36–43 (kick → ride), always available.

3. Advanced

  • SETUP / MIDI learn — hold Z Down ~1 s to enter (works with relay). Main picks slot 0–12; move a CC, key, or X/Y to learn. Save with Z Up → Middle; hold Down again to exit without saving.
  • Maps tab — edit the learn table and flash it with Write maps. Factory CC maps: voice 24, engine 24 (Omni).
  • Settings (⚙) — MIDI ports, Voice A/B channels, pitch bend range, Preview (RAM) / Save config to flash.
  • USB roles — laptop = device mode (this editor). A keyboard plugged into the Computer = host mode. Power-cycle to switch; host needs hardware Rev 1.1+.
  • Factory reset — hold Z Down at power-on (~0.1 s) to restore defaults including the clickless envelope and factory maps.

Use the Log tab if SysEx or relay traffic looks wrong. Front-panel telemetry needs firmware 0.8.9+ with panel stream enabled (Connect / Identify).

Live engine

Changes apply immediately in device mode (RAM). Use Write maps to flash above to keep them after power-cycle. All engines are 4-voice polyphonic. Voice matrix: 11 base timbres × 11 variations = 121 patches (CC 0–120 on factory Audio engine CC 24).

Factory maps: Attack → X, Release → Y. Cutoff / PWM are slots 11–12 (learn CC or knobs in SETUP). Engines 8–12 keep filter/chorus/glide/sync/FM on each voice (not the mix bus). Cutoff = filter / FM index; PWM = pulse width, sync ratio, acid wave, or FM ratio.
MIDI channel 10 notes 36–43 always play the pad kit (kick / snare / CHH / OHH / low tom / high tom / crash / ride), separate from Voice A/B.

MIDI maps (device SysEx)

Factory defaults: voice CC 24 (Omni). Slots 5–6 are reserved. Host SETUP can re-learn these; this table edits the same flash block.

Engine defaults are set in Live engine below; Write maps also stores those values with the CC learn table.

MIDI relay (controller → card)

Plug a USB MIDI keyboard into this PC. The page forwards its notes/CCs/pitch-bend to the Workshop Computer, so you can play and debug SETUP learn without unplugging the Computer from the laptop.

Relay off

Channel messages only (no SysEx). Select the keyboard — not the Computer’s own MIDI port. Activity: 0 msgs · held notes cleared when relay is turned off.

Every message this page sends to the Workshop Computer.
